STOP REMOVING ATMS!
Although an agreement has been announced between the federal government and Febelfin, it does not guarantee access to ATMs.
In the absence of an acceptable and binding agreement, we ask that the text of the agreement be analysed in the House and that the federal government go through the legislative process.
The demands made in this petition remain unchanged.
ATMs keep diminishing
In Europe, Belgium has had the largest number of ATM withdrawals over the past 5 years: every day, at least one bank branch closes and thus the ATMs located there disappear.
By the end of 2024, between the agency closures, the implementation of the Batopin project and the agreement between Febelfin and the federal government, 4,061 devices will be available, offering no sufficient guarantee of the distances to be covered.
This means that clients will have longer distances to travel to access them.
Access to our money is a right!
Our organizations keep getting complaints from angry clients who are not able to access their own money when needed.
The prevailing feeling is widely shared: while banks have a monopoly on deposits, they are preventing us from accessing our money when we want/need it.
The banking sector does as it pleases
Despite the numerous complaints throughout the country, local petitions, motions passed by many communal colleges, regional parliament resolutions, countless parliamentary questions in the Chamber of Representatives from all political parties, the banking sector remains deaf. Yet, the right to access one's own money is a fundamental right.

As the agreement with the banking sector on this issue is still insufficient, we ask Ministers Van Peteghem, Dermagne and Bertrand:
- an immediate end to any further withdrawal of ATMs;
- that the ATM number present on 31 December 2021 be restored as a minimum, and fairly distributed throughout the kingdom (more information in our press release of 30 November 2022);
- that without an acceptable and binding agreement, the Federal Government proceeds without delay to legislate: easy access to cash, i.e. to our money, is a right that must be guaranteed to all bank customers.
